Retirement and Your Local Senior Center

I checked out the Senior Center here in Fort Collins, CO yesterday. A six block walk, two buses and an hour later, I arrived for the center’s “Lunch and Learn” event only to find out it was canceled. L That was a disappointment, but a center volunteer, Leona, made my trip worthwhile. She gave me a tour of the facility, describing all the activities that go on at the center, such as quilting, pottery, woodworking, painting, fitness classes, swimming, movies, dances, and much more. Tax assistance, health screenings, and an exercise class were going on while I was there. The indoor walking track was in full swing, too. Workout equipment is spread throughout the building, making use of every available space in the building until they can add on, which they hope to do in the future. I did not see the kitchen and event rooms, but evidently the space is frequently rented for events, such as weddings and receptions. That’s smart use of the space and the rental income doesn’t hurt either. They have a beautiful outdoor area that overlooks Rolland Moore Park.

Beyond the onsite activities, the Senior Center offers day trips, including trips to area casinos. Leona and another volunteer said they don’t go on these trips just for the gambling; instead, they go for the sight seeing. At $12 for the trip, it’s a bargain. They also offer longer trips to places like California, Arizona, and New Mexico. They go to lunch, see plays, concerts, etc. and according to Leona, they have a great time. Activities at the center, her volunteer work there, church, and activities at the hospital’s Aspen Club all keep this 76 year old very busy. Leona’s enthusiasm for the center, its many activities and for life as a retired woman in Fort Collins was shared by others I met at the center. In my brief time there, I saw three people come in to join. Anyone 50+ can join the senior center for just $25 per year plus some activity fees.

To learn more about a senior center in your town, go there! Ask for a tour and ask lots of questions. Look around and think about what YOU might want to do there. Talk to seniors who are using the facility. What activities do they participate in? What else do they do? Leona mentioned the hospital’s Aspen Club to me and even suggested some activities to try during my stay. Put yourself out there and you may be surprised what you learn. One final word of advice: leave your preconceived notions about senior facilities at home. They are not for old, decrepit people who smell and wear diapers! These days, facilities are catering to the young 60, 70 and 80 year olds who want to keep their minds and bodies actively engaged in life. They are fun places. Personally, the upcoming class, “Back on Bike” interests me, so I can relearn that skill before I hit the many bike trails in Fort Collins. What would YOU like to do?

Thumbs up for FC's Senior Center and all their activities. Can’t wait to become a member!
